Limited Scope Radiographer

Course Details:

This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the four major components of radiography, which include patient care, radiation protection, image production and evaluation, and radiographic procedures. To ensure active engagement and progression, students are required to complete two weekly video viewings (3-hours), review sessions(3-hours), quizzes (1-hour), and participate in discussion boards (1-hour). The successful completion of these requirements is essential to maintain pace with the class and cohort.

How it Works:

Our online courses are structured to follow the same course content as our campus programs. Each LIVE online course requires student participation up to four days per week for a duration of eighteen (18) weeks. Student will also have the opportunity to watch the lecture at a later time if you were unable to attend the "LIVE" lecture. All course content will be provided online for students to download and review before and after class.

Course Materials:

Students will be provided access to an online dashboard where you can view digital course materials, quizzes, exams, and videos.

Clinical Rotations:

Clinical rotations are offered separately on a first come, first serve basis at any of our locations for a total of 480 hours. Upon receipt of your full payment, you will be given the opportunity to schedule your clinical rotation location, date and time. Clinical rotations must be scheduled at a mimimum of three (3), but maximum of five days per week. Clinical requirements vary by state.

COURSE OVERIEW & OBJECTIVES

Patient Care: The patient care component of the program emphasizes the importance of effective communication, compassion, and professionalism when interacting with patients. Students will learn how to establish a rapport with patients, address their concerns and anxieties, and ensure their comfort and well-being throughout radiographic procedures. They will develop the skills to obtain relevant medical histories, assess patient readiness for radiographic examinations, and identify contraindications. Additionally, students will acquire proficiency in accurate patient positioning, immobilization techniques, and the appropriate use of radiation protection devices to optimize patient safety and comfort.

Radiographic Procedures: In the procedures component, students will acquire a comprehensive understanding of radiographic positioning techniques for various anatomical structures and body systems. They will develop the ability to select appropriate radiographic projections and techniques based on patient condition, clinical indications, and physician orders. Students will also learn to utilize imaging accessories, such as grids, compression devices, and contrast media, to enhance image quality and diagnostic accuracy. Through hands-on training, they will become proficient in operating radiographic equipment, including collimators, exposure controls, and image receptors, while adhering to radiation safety protocols.

Image Production & Evaluation: The image production and evaluation component focuses on the principles and techniques involved in producing high-quality radiographic images. Students will gain a deep understanding of radiographic exposure factors, including kilovoltage, milliamperage, exposure time, and focal spot size, and how to manipulate them to optimize image quality. They will learn the physics of image formation, including X-ray production, attenuation, and the characteristics of different image receptors. Additionally, students will develop skills in image processing and manipulation, including digital image enhancement, stitching, and archiving. They will also learn how to critique radiographic images, identify artifacts, and implement quality assurance measures to ensure diagnostic accuracy.

Radiation Protection: Radiation protection is a critical component of the limited scope radiography program. Students will learn the principles of ionizing radiation, including its biological effects, units of measurement, and radiation dose limits. They will understand and apply ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles to minimize radiation exposure to patients, healthcare personnel, and the general public. Students will become proficient in implementing proper radiation shielding techniques, including the use of lead aprons, thyroid collars, and gonadal shields, to protect sensitive tissues from unnecessary radiation exposure. They will also gain a comprehensive understanding of regulatory guidelines and legal requirements related to radiation safety and protection, including documentation, monitoring, and record-keeping.

Clinical Education: To complement the theoretical knowledge and technical skills learned in the classroom, students will participate in 480 hours of supervised clinical experience in healthcare facilities. These experiences provide students with real-world exposure and the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in practical scenarios. Under the guidance of licensed radiologic technologists, students will gain hands-on experience in performing radiographic procedures, interacting with patients, and operating radiographic equipment. This integration of theoretical and practical learning ensures the development of competent and confident limited scope radiographers.

Professional Development: The limited scope radiography program also emphasizes the importance of ongoing professional development. Students will be encouraged to stay updated with advancements in limited scope radiography through continuing education and professional development activities. They will engage in self-assessment and reflective practice to identify areas for improvement and pursue lifelong learning to enhance.
