IV Access & Contrast Injection Certification

Upon completion of the didactic training, students will be scheduled onsite in small groups to obtain their practical training and competency in IV access and contrast enhanced injections. Upon completion of the program, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your practical skills in the presence of a board certified physician who will validate your state contrast injection application (if applicable).

The Intravenous Contrast Injection course summarizes the key concepts around the chemical and physical properties of commonly used intravenous contrast media and injectable suspensions within imaging, including those used in conjunction with Radiography, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Interventional Radiology, Ultrasound and Echocardiographic testing. Venous identification and catheter /butterfly insertion techniques are a vital part of the practical component of the course. Proper aseptic techniques and complications of insertions are discussed, as well as the equipment required and procedure to follow for proper insertion of both angiocatheter and butterfly syringe. We will practice drawing up intravenous solutions, monitoring the administration of IV solutions, and injecting into pre-existing lines. Safety aspects relating to needle stick injury to the practitioner is also included.

Topics to be covered but not limited to are:

  • Venipuncture of a person’s upper extremity in a safe and effective manner
  • Anatomy and Physiology of venipuncture sites
  • Venipuncture instruments and related equipment
  • Techniques of intravenous line establishment
  • Hazards and complications of venipuncture
  • Post puncture care
  • Actions and reactions of contrast media
  • Emergency measures and medications required to deal with adverse reactions
